Ruth 4:1

Now Ephron was sitting among the sons of Heth; and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the sons of Heth, even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,

So Hamor and his son Shechem came to the gate of their city and spoke to the men of their city, saying,

‘And he shall flee to one of these cities and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city and speak his case in the hearing of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city to them and give him a place, so that he may live among them.

And Absalom used to rise early and stand beside the way to the gate; and when any man had a case to come to the king for judgment, Absalom would call to him and say, “From what city are you?” And he would say, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel.”

Now the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, clothed in their royal garments, and they were sitting at the threshing floor at the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets were prophesying before them.

Those who dwell at the gate moan about me, And I am the drunkards’ songs.

Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits with the elders of the land.

“And I signed and sealed the deed and called in witnesses and weighed out the silver on the scales.
