Numbers 25:7

And Aaron’s son Eleazar took one of the daughters of Putiel as a wife, and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers’ households of the Levites according to their families.

So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses, and about three thousand men of the people fell that day.

Then Aaron took it as Moses had spoken, and ran into the midst of the assembly, for behold, the plague had begun among the people. So he put on the incense and made atonement for the people.

“Behold, these caused the sons of Israel, through the word of Balaam, to act unfaithfully against Yahweh in the matter of Peor, so the plague was among the congregation of Yahweh.

“Your eyes have seen what Yahweh has done in the case of Baal-peor, for all the men who walked after Baal-peor, Yahweh your God has destroyed them from among you.

Then the sons of Israel sent to the sons of Reuben and to the sons of Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, into the land of Gilead, Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest,

‘Is the iniquity of Peor too small a thing for us, from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day, although there was a plague on the congregation of Yahweh?

And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was ruler over them previously, and Yahweh was with him.

Then Phinehas stood up and interceded, And so the plague was checked.

“My covenant with him was one of life and peace, and I gave them to him as something to be feared; so he feared Me and stood in awe of My name.

Nor let us act in sexual immorality, as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
