John 19:31

his corpse shall not hang all night on the tree, but you shall surely bury him on the same day (because cursed of God is he who is hanged), so that you do not make unclean your land which Yahweh your God gives you as an inheritance.

Now on the next day, the day after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered together with Pilate,

Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; it was about the sixth hour. And he *said to the Jews, “Behold, your King!”

Therefore because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
